Odoo Community vs Enterprise: which edition is right for your business?

One of the first decisions in any Odoo project is which edition to use. Both run on the same framework, so the choice is not about quality, it is about which apps you need, how you want to host Odoo and who will look after upgrades.

What you get with Odoo Community

Odoo Community is free and open source. You install it on your own server or cloud and can use core apps such as CRM, Sales, Purchase, Inventory, Invoicing, Manufacturing, Website, eCommerce, Point of Sale and Project. Thousands of extra modules are available from the Odoo App Store and the community.

• No licence fee, you pay only for hosting and the people who set it up
• Full access to the code, so anything can be customised
• Upgrades between versions are your responsibility

What Enterprise adds

Odoo Enterprise is a paid subscription, usually priced per user. It includes everything in Community plus apps and features many growing companies rely on, for example the full Accounting app, Studio (no-code customisation), Helpdesk, Quality, Planning, Documents, Sign, Payroll and the Odoo mobile experience. It also includes official support and Odoo’s upgrade service.

• Full accounting with bank synchronisation and financial reports
• Studio for adding fields, screens and automations without code
• Hosting choice: Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own servers
• Version upgrades handled with Odoo’s upgrade service

How to choose

Community is a good fit when…

• Your needs are mainly sales, purchasing, stock and invoicing
• You have (or hire) technical people to host and maintain it
• Budget is tight and you are comfortable owning upgrades

Enterprise is a better fit when…

• You want to run full accounting inside Odoo
• You need apps like Helpdesk, Quality, Payroll or Studio
• You want predictable upgrades to each new Odoo version

Can you switch later?

Yes. Many companies start on Community and move to Enterprise as they grow. Your data stays in the same database; the Enterprise modules are installed on top. We handle this Community → Enterprise conversion as part of our migration services.
